Shakti Love Notes

We are always growing. I love that! And the more I grow, the more I recognize how important it is for us all to share what we're going through-- even (and especially) me.

So these Love Notes are a space for me to share with you each week-- about the studio, my life, how our community is growing.

Lately I've been thinking a lot about implicit bias.

According to 2015 research Understanding Implicit Bias by Ohio State University, 'implicit bias refers to the attitudes or stereotypes that affect our understanding, actions, and decisions in an unconscious manner. These biases, which encompass both favorable and unfavorable assessments, are activated involuntarily and without an individualโ€™s awareness or intentional control.'

So I've started to reallllyyyy notice when I judge people where I didn't know I was judging before.

This newfound awareness effects me in two different ways, depending on the day.
Option 1: Major shame spiral followed by internal crisis, fragility, and shutting down
Option 2: A deep breath and time for deep thought

[Of course, the preferable option is obvious but not always the winner.]

Here's a tool that really helps me in the moment:
inhale I love you
exhale I love you
inhale self love
exhale love to the world

I even imagine particles of breath as particles of love. It's super froufrou-woowoo AND it's super helpful for me. It's a reminder that:
a) I am not in control of the world but I am in charge of me
d) where I lean in with authentic connection, I create space for hope & change

Often the reality of implicit bias feels devastating and big and insurmountable. And when I feel that way I have the choice to stay there or to pull up my bootstraps and walk into the world.

Truth is that Intention (internal motivation), time, and awareness are the keys to rewiring our brains and creating new pathways for change, freedom, hope, and a better world.

Rachel Cargle states the equation for allyship (being a yes for others) as follows:
KNOWLEDGE + EMPATHY + ACTION

May I set clear intentions. May I slow down. May I be mindful. May I take action.

Wishing the same for you...

xx

recap:

the Leadership Retreat
This past weekend the Duality Project hosted the first retreat for Leaders. We talked about the necessary feeling of uncomfortable, personal core values as guiding principals of leadership, feedback as a means for true growth, writing permission slips, implicit bias / race / & white feminism, body image, debunking trendy words like 'empowerment,' and the importance of compassionate courage.

the Duality Project is the mission of Ruby & Kate Moore (GetFit615) to show up in the REAL WORLD with REAL LIFE CONVERSATIONS. Retreats are opportunities to share & grow in doing the work. Ruby & Kate consider themselves facilitators of guided self-discovery & growth.
<< Check out the next retreat, Heartfelt, or reach out for
consulting, workspace visits, or team development. >>
