Shakti Love Notes

We are always growing. I love that! And the more I grow, the more I recognize how important it is for us all to share what we're going through-- even (and especially) me.

So these Love Notes are a space for me to share with you each week-- about the studio, my life, how our community is growing.

I think a lot about who I was when I first started practicing yoga.

I was 18 years old. I was a university student in Nashville, Tennessee, studying the violin & music education. I cared a lot about not gaining the freshman fifteen. I journaled a lot, prayed a lot, worried a lot that I might not be good enough to succeed. I was grieving the loss of my father the year before. And mostly, I needed to be right. I needed to know I was in the right place doing the right thing the right way.

I remember showing up to my very first yoga class (circa 2011), and before I even stepped into the hot room I felt a complete sense of relief & belonging. It's like my soul said, 'you're gonna want to hang around here. you need to see what this is about.'

So I did.

I practiced every day. It was a Hot 26 Bikram-style studio, and I remember staring at myself in the mirrors, anchoring my attention to myself as my body sweated, breathed & transformed.

It was in this 105 degree room that I started to realize how much effort I put into TRYING SO HARD... to be good enough & simultaneously to not be 'too much' for people.

Marianne Williamson has a poem that goes like this,

"...We ask ourselves, Who am I to be brilliant, gorgeous, talented, and fabulous? Actually, who are you not to be? You are a child of God. Your playing small does not serve the world... We are all meant to shine... and as we let our own light shine, we unconsciously give others permission to do the same..."

I worry less about success now. And I trust myself today more than ever before. I've also rarely missed a day of yoga since that first practice. For me, showing up every day is part of becoming. And thankfully, I've discovered that being right is different than being right for me, right now.

Beyond the mat...

We love Athens.
And we love you.
So let's have more of that-- together.

Here's where you can see what we're up to outside of the studio.

Have ideas about where we should be / what we should check out / how we can show up?

Our team tried Pure Balance Pilates, a new reformer-based pilates studio on Baxter. The owner, Ali, is part of the Shakti fam, and we can't wait for her to officially open TODAY!
We loved the slow, controlled reformer work and their studio mantra, 'build strength, find balance.' (Check it out!)
