Shakti Love Notes

We are always growing. I love that! And the more I grow, the more I recognize how important it is for us all to share what we're going through-- even (and especially) me.

So these Love Notes are a space for me to share with you each week-- about the studio, my life, how our community is growing.

There are things I was taught not to talk about.

It wasn't a specific lesson, but it was a collection of reminders about being a woman. I remember knowing that as a girl I should speak softly, cross my legs, and try my best to not intimidate anyone-- I shouldn't be too loud, too needy, too strong, too smart, or too honest.

Alone was easy.

I kept to myself a lot in high school. I thought a lot, wrote a lot, but didn't always have the courage or care to speak a lot. I felt misunderstood by my peers and afraid to disappoint the adults in my life.

It's bigger than me, though.

I realized this after my dad died and I moved to Nashville for college. I learned a lot about grief, self-care, the duality of right / wrong, healing, shame, and love. My friendships stayed honest and became diverse. I stopped speaking softly and started to become a softer person who spoke loudly. I stopped second-guessing my worthiness and started taking up more space in my life.

Being an honest friend made me an honest person.

I stopped saying yes so much and started saying yes to the people and things I really wanted. And you know what happened? All of a sudden there was space to breathe, space to connect, and space to give & receive support.

It's worth the work.

Sometimes it takes a lot of time to do the work. Sometimes it's as simple as starting with what you want.

I want authentic connection. I want to see & be seen. I want to be passionate, loud, honest, and smart. I want to be so much Me that there is plenty of space for you to be You.

My dear friend Kate told me this week:
"I want to know that I can walk out the door, share what I need to with the first woman I see... with any woman... and she would say ‘I believe you. I’m here for you. Thank you, honey. You’re not alone. How can I support you?’

I want to be that woman living in that kind of world.
How can I support you?

Beyond the mat...

We love Athens.
And we love you.
So let's have more of that-- together.

Here's where you can see what we're up to outside of the studio.

The Autumn Harvest Feast is one of our favorite events of the year! In short, it was delicious and we probably even saw you there. Thank you Athens Farmers Market! We love that we get to sponsor & support initiatives to make nourishing foods more accessible!

Shakti Nashville turned 6 this week!
Shakti is bigger than us! In fact, Shakti Power Yoga was created in Nashville, TN by Kelly Farina Carter & Lauren Farina. Ruby was their first employee. The community there inspired Ruby to open Shakti in Athens & share the Shakti Love with YOU. We are family.

Shakti Teacher Retreat
Our teachers spent the weekend with Kate Moore of GetFit615 and the Duality Project. We talked about confidence, self-care, authentic connection, empowerment, privilege, inclusivity, racism, vulnerability, communication, listening & how in order to grow we must expect life to be uncomfortable. It was a big weekend! It is very important to us that you feel welcome, seen, safe, and supported at Shakti. We honor the connection we get to share with you, and we are consistently awe-struck when we choose to be open & real and you meet us with openness & realness. And how amazing that we all get to move & sweat & GROW together!
